Short-circuit analyses are essential studies in electric power systems. The focus of the IEEE Violet Book is on providing an understanding and proper application of analytical techniques of short-circuit analyses in industrial and commercial power systems. The same engineering principles apply to all electrical power systems, including utilities and systems other than 60 Hz.

The IEEE Violet Book covers a basic understanding of short-circuit currents in more detail than is discussed in the other IEEE Color Books. Some of the different items covered in this book include chapters on the contributions to the short-circuit current of regenerative SCR drives and capacitors to faults. The reference chapter in this book is quite extensive and should be very useful for any type of power system analysis.
