Description: A good medieval mystery is not easy to write. The author must become immersed in the culture, history and use of language of the times. Susan McDuffie manages to do this with great skill. This novel is written from the first person viewpoint of Scottish Muirteach MacPhee who along with his wife Mariota accompanies Donald, the thirteen-year-old son of the Lord of the Isles, to Oxford in 1374. Reminiscent of the medieval mysteries of Ellis Peters, this novel recreates a sense of the period. There are a number of mysteries in this novel. First, the daughter of a tavern keeper disappears. Then an Oxford master is found murdered. The arrest of a servant creates unrest between townspeople and university students. The theft of a cryptic series of parchments and a manuscript adds to the puzzle. Muirteach does his best to investigate at the behest of Under Sheriff Grymbaud. But when another master is stabbed to death, he is stumped. The abduction of his healer wife causes Muirteach to rush into action and get to the bottom of the mysteries. This is a well-written, well-paced mystery novel that has the reader turning the pages from first to last.
